Detective Smallfur: Interview

Reporter: You were a private detective once, correct?

Detective Smallfur: Yes.

Reporter: Why did you become a private detective?

Detective Smallfur: I found that at the time I left, the other detectives were unreliable. If you asked one to find info on “XXX” and asked about it a month later, they hadn’t done it. However, it wasn’t like they were working on a case!

Reporter: Why did you come back?

Detective Smallfur: Well, Detective Spectacles asked me to come back and see if I would rejoin. The team had been all new, and I liked working with them.

Reporter: Why did you reject the role of Head of the Department?

Detective Smallfur: I am thinking of retiring. My mother is not in good health, and I have just picked out a place for her to live with other elderly rodents. The place is called “Cherry Tree Family Cottage”. I want to help out there. Also, in olden times to solve mysteries was more fun! Today, we have new-fangled technology to help us; it takes out the real thrill.

Reporter: Your cousin, Detective Spectacles, told us that you inspired him to become a detective. Do you think you were a big influence on him?

Detective Smallfur: I don’t actually think so ...

Reporter: Do you ever regret becoming a detective?

Detective Smallfur: No.

Detective Smallfur: Life Story

Detective Smallfur was born on November 22, on one of the most Northern Capybara Islands. He studied in New Guinea Pig City and moved to Hamstervill for work. He is not married.

Detective Mousy: Life Story

Detective Mousy was born in Hamstervill, on February 2. His mother, Penelope Mousy, was a Scottish wood mouse. At age eight, Detective Mousy was a fine cheese smeller and could smell poison from two miles away! When Detective Mousy decided to train to become a Jr. Detective, he was often bullied because of his extraordinary sense of smell and small ears. He is currently a special case detective for the Hamstervill Police Team. He is friends with Detective Smallfur, and the two have worked on many cases together.

Detective Mousy: Interview

Reporter: Hello, Detective Mousy. How are you today?

Detective Mousy: Good, thank you!

Reporter: What case are you currently working on?

Detective Mousy: The Stolen Mona Squeaka. You can read the June 12 edition of The Daily Squeaker for more info.

Reporter: What inspired you to become a detective, how long have you been one, and would you recommend becoming one?

Detective Mousy: I was inspired to become a detective by the movie “Mouse Eater VS. The Hamstervill Detectives." I’ve been a detective for seven years. Furthermore, I’ve always loved being a detective and have never regretted it. I would definitely recommend becoming a Jr. Detective, so you know how much work being a detective can be.

Reporter: Thank you for this interview, Detective Mousy! I hope to see you again soon!

Assistant Wiskers: Interview

Reporter: Mr. Wiskers, do you go by Assistant Wiskers, Wiskers, or Mr. Wiskers?

Mr. Wiskers: I think Wiskers will be fine, Sir.

Reporter: Why did you become a detective assistant, do you enjoy it, and what is it like to be one?

Wiskers: My true dream is to become a real detective. I enjoy working with Detective Smallfur (Cassy Squeak is writing a book about one of our adventures), but I don’t really enjoy working with Detective Mousy.

Reporter: Why?

Wiskers: Because he starts to snore when he gets too excited

Reporter: Thank you for this interview,Wiskers. I hope to see you again soon!

Life Story

Wiskers was born in Ireland on August 27. He is a lemming and lives in Lemmmington. Wiskers takes the bus to and from his work. He is married to Shannon Wiskers who is also Irish. Shannon is a professor at the Hamstervill University and an expert in Library Science. In his free time, Wiskers enjoys repairing old typewriters.

Interview with Maria Furball

Reporter: Good afternoon, Ms. Furball!

Maria Furball: Hello, Reporter. We met before, correct?

Reporter: Yes, could you tell us a little bit about what happened the day you were kidnapped?

Maria: Well, in our first interview I was answering the question as follows:

“Reporter: Can you give us your side of the story?

Maria: Yes, well, I was stepping outside to get a breath of fresh air after the director told us we would be filming the last scene that day. Then suddenly I saw a flash of white, and I could no longer see. When I tried to scream, someone clamped his/her hands over my mouth and said something. I don’t remember what he/his said but the voice reminded me of Samanda; a fellow actress of mine.”

Then that very rude police officer (“That is classified information that is not ready to give to the public.”) interrupted me.

Reporter: So what happened?

Maria: Well, there was never any evidence that Samanda was part of the kidnapping, but Samanda left the set two days later. Then I was told to sit in a car. Also, they put a blindfold on me. Then I must have fainted. When I awoke, I was in an old shack. In front of me sat Furball Ratty himself.

Reporter: Sorry to interrupt, but many rodents have been asking if there is a connection between your last name being Furball and Furball Ratty?

Maria: No, there is not! After waking up in the shack, I was kept there. Furball Ratty would come every two days with water and food.

Reporter: You are currently in Hawaii, correct?

Maria: Yes, I am currently lying on the white sand of a Hawaiian beach.

Reporter: Have you been enjoying your vacation?

Maria: Yes!

Reporter: Thank you for a marvelous interview, Ms. Furball!

Interview with Irina & Eira Fyodorsdottir (Jr. Detectives)

Reporter: Hello, Irina & Eira!

Sisters: Hi.

Reporter: Are you the Jr. Detectives on the Hamstervill Detective Team?

Irina: Yes.

Reporter: Why did you sign up for the program?

Eira: Our father did! We came home one day after school, and our mother asked us why we weren't at the Detective Department. After some very loud arguments, it turned out that our dad had thought the program started in a week, and hadn’t told us!

Reporter: Do you enjoy it?

Irina: Yes.

Reporter: Can you describe the program, and how long have you been taking the classes?

Eira: We have been taking the classes for three years now, and I’m hoping to go into the paid program where I will be paid for the cases I solve.

Irina: Well, in the beginning we had classes once a week ...

Reporter: Sorry to interrupt, but what did they teach in the classes, and who taught you?

Eira: Detective Furry-Pants & Mrs. Svetlana Skunkinowna often taught the classes. We were taught how to identify finger and boot prints, how to correctly write in a detective log, and how codes worked….

Irina: As I was saying, at first we had classes once a week, currently we have it 5 days a week.

Reporter: Is the program free?

Eira: Yes.

Reporter: Would you recommend trying it out?

Irina: Yes!!!😀

Reporter: Thank you for this interview Eira & Irina! I hope to see you around Hamstervill or perhaps solving a case!😉

Interview with Dr. GreyMouse (Historian)!

Reporter: Good afternoon, Dr. GreyMouse.

Dr. GreyMouse: Hello.

Reporter: What is your job at the Hamstervill Detective Department?

Dr. GreyMouse: I’m their historian.

Reporter: What does that mean?

Dr. GreyMouse: I know all about local history, so if a detective asks “What do you know about New Guinea Pig City in 1944?” I can tell all about it.

Reporter: Do you enjoy your job?

Dr. GreyMouse: Yes.

Reporter: How did you end up working for the Detective Department?

Dr. GreyMouse: Well, they posted an ad in the Hamstervill Harold saying that they needed a new historian (the old one had turned out to be a murderer).

Reporter: Do you read The Daily Squeaker at all?

Dr. GreyMouse: Yes, very often. I enjoy reading the “Meet:” pages. It tells me so much about a rodent's personality, and it helped me to organize a book signing for my wife, Milli.

Reporter: When is the book signing?

Dr. GreyMouse: It is September 16, 2020 at 2:30 pm. Would you be interested in doing an article?

Reporter: Yes! What is the book called?

Dr. GreyMouse: It's the first book in a series called The Rodent Saga; book 1 is called The Land We Lost.

Reporter: Would you recommend working with the Detective Department?

Dr. GreyMouse: Well, in the beginning, I was bullied a lot because I was a rat. When they found out how helpful it was to have me around (they were reluctant to ask for information from me!), it stopped. I must say, however, that I sometimes regret joining their team. Since I know you will ask me why, let's just say, I won’t tell you!

Reporter: Thank you for this interview, Dr. GreyMouse.

Interview with Mrs. Svetlana Skunkinowa!

Reporter: Good afternoon, Mrs. Skunkinowa!

Mrs. Skunkinowa: Please call me Svetlana.

Reporter: What job do you have in the Detective Department?

Svetlana: Forensic Anthropologist.

Reporter: For rodents that do not know, what is a Forensic Anthropologist?

Svetlana: I work with bones.

Reporter: Do you enjoy your work?

Svetlana: Yes!😉

Reporter: Have you ever regretted becoming a Forensic Anthropologist?

Svetlana: A couple of years ago, a grey squirrel was really unhappy/mad that I had proved that his wife was a murderer. So he went after me with some walnut shells. He is currently living in Hamstervill….

Reporter: Would you recommend becoming a Forensic Anthropologist?

Svetlana: ……… (no response)

Reporter: What school did you go to to learn about Forensic Anthropologist?

Svetlana: I went to the New Guinea Pig City University.

Reporter: Thank you for this interview, Svetlana! Do you have anything to say to The Daily Squeaker readers?

Svetlana: Thank you, it was a pleasure talking to you! Readers of The Daily Squeaker, remember, you have the right to say no. I have to do it a lot with a clover bush who wants to take over the house!

Furball Ratty

Furball Ratty Caught!

Furball Ratty was caught on September 10, 2020 at 3:30 pm, by Detective Beaver Tail. This case was actually Detective Smallfur's, but he was feeling unwell and asked Detective Beaver Tail to substitute for him. Detective Smallfur had found out that Furball Ratty was staying in an old shack, just outside of Hamstervill. He then asked Detective Beaver Tail to investigate, because he had a sneaky suspicion that Furball Ratty had learned that he had figured out his hiding place. So, Detective Beaver Tail went out and caught Ratty, just as he was finishing up packing. It is still unknown who warned Ratty that Detective Smallfur was coming. Part of Ratty’s gang is still on the loose. To find out if they are caught check the Bonus Article page!

Mr. Ground Squirrel’s Art Collection was found and proven to be a fraud!

This weekend Detective Furry Pants proved that his suspicion was correct: Mr. Ground Squirrel’s “valuable” art collection was stolen. It still gets worse though! After they found the art collection, professionals were put in charge of making sure that the collection was ok. It turned out that the collection was fake; all the pictures were only replicas of the original. As soon as Mr. Ground Squirrel realized that he had been found out, he ran. He was last seen running up Hamster Hill in Hamstervill. If you see Mr. Ground Squirrel or have any idea where he is please contact The Daily Squeaker or the Hamstervill Detective Department. For updates, please check The Daily Squeaker home page. Ee will provide you with a link to the correct page to check. The art

Mr. Ground Squirrel
Home Tree of Mr. Ground Squirrel

collection was found just outside of Mr. Ground Squirrel’s home tree, a storage shed he had told the police was empty. Detective Furry Pants insisted on taking a peek, and he didn’t believe his eyes: inside the storage shed was where Mr. Ground Squirrel did his jewelry work. That of course is not a crime, but Detective Furry Pants also found some large rubies that had been reported stolen. The rubies belonged to Madame Von Hedgerow (see info HERE). We did not report this, because it happened this Saturday. If you would like to read about that case click HERE. You can also find it in the Bonus Article section.

Milli GreyMouse

Milli GreyMouse: Book Signing

Milli GreyMouse (husband of Dr. GreyMouse) started to write a book series The Rodent Saga. The first book (called The Land We Lost) was published on August 12, 2020. Milli did her first book signing event from 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm today. About 300 rodents came today to the Hamstervill Main Library Branch. She told us that these were a lot more rodents than she had hoped.

The book The Land We Lost is about Hamstington in 1883. In 1883, the royal family was in turmoil! The queen's sister had been murdered supposedly by Sir Guinea who was the official coat of arms maker at the time. The diary ends abruptly, at the peak of the story. Dr. GreyMouse told us that the second book, What happened to time?, the mysterious ending is lifted.

If you would like to purchase a copy of The Land We Lost, please go to any bookstore in Hamstervill. They should have it!

4th Grade Teacher at Walnut School for Learning: Florence Fluff-fur

Teachers on Strike!

At the Walnut School for learning, teachers are on strike because administrators are refusing to buy them a new coffee machine. The old one gave its last cup of coffee on September 5, 2020. Since then, the teachers have been wanting a new coffee machine. “I fell asleep twice during class, because I didn’t have my morning cup [of coffee], ” one teacher remarked. Mrs. Crabapple (see her page HERE) supplies the teachers with blueberry muffins (in summer), pumpkin muffins (in fall), gingerbread cookies (in winter), and mini lemon meringue tarts (in spring). Most staff members have complained that Mrs. Crabapple's treats would taste better with coffee. Seeing their dilemma, Mrs. Crabapple has lent the teachers her coffee machine, as most rodents prefer her nut hot chocolate (you get to choose what type of nut goes in!) during the fall season. Unfortunately, this cannot be a long term deal, since Mrs. Crabapple will need her coffee machine back when spring rolls in. If you want to support the teachers of the Walnut School for Learning, please see if you can donate a coffee machine (the latest model preferred😉).

Dawn Summer Bright

Dawn Summer passes Water Police Test

Dawn Summer, the in training member of the Hamstervill water Police, had her water police test today. She passed with flying colors, as her friends Nellie Clearwater & Minnie Claws reported. We decided not to ask Dawn for an interview. However, if you are interested in learning more about her, please visit the Meet: The Hamstervill Water Police page.

General Info

The Water Police test gives a rodent the right to join any Water Police Team within Hamstington. Some areas, such as New Lemmington, Lemmington, and Lemmingvill, require the Water Police members to complete an extra course on ice skating, skiing, and snowboarding. The test is quite simple. A rodent taking the course may choose a partner (Dawn chose Minnesota "Minnie" Claws), and they do a number of exercises together. Each test is different, so rodents don’t know what to expect.

Boba Tea

Bubble Tea Comes to Hamstington!

Last Wednesday, a pirate ship from China crashed into the Rattington Town ship docks; all the pirates were arrested. Onboard, they found a strange machine. When they asked the pirates what it was, they said it was a Bubble Tea machine. Ms. Rosemary, who was at the town docs at the time waiting for her boat to Italy, exclaimed that Bubble Tea was amazing. However, she didn’t know how to work the machine. When they asked the leader of the pirates, Harry Sharkscar, he told them he would only tell them how to work the machine if they freed him and his crew from prison, and cleared his name of all crimes. Know, Rattington officials weren’t too sure if they really needed the Boba tea machine. However, when they saw Ms. Rosemary’s face, they knew that they were about to free Harry Sharkscar and his crew. Do you want to make Boba/Bubble tea? What are you planning to wear on Halloween? We talk to three students at the Lemming School for Learning (See May 20 & 21)

Clarissa
Cindy
Mike

Reporter: What are you planning to go as on Halloween?

Clarissa: Well, I think I’m going to go as Madame Von Hedgerow.

Reporter: Why?

Clarissa: Why not?

Reporter: *My fellow reporter was right, Clarissa really is quite annoying!*. Do you look up to Madame Von Hedgerow?

Clarissa: Yes! Except that it's really quite embarrassing about her winter coat and that her grandmother's rubies were robbed.

Reporter: How are you planning on making your costume?

Clarissa: Why should I tell you? So, you can report it? I’m not telling anyone; so nobody steals my ideas!

Reporter: In your last interview with The Daily Squeaker you told us that you are hoping to transfer to a boarding school. Did you in fact do that?

Clarissa: Well….no.

Reporter: Thank you for this interview *NOT!*, Clarissa.

***

Reporter: What are you planning to go as on Halloween?

Mike: The Tail Tennis star James Longwhiskers.

Reporter: How are you planning on making your costume?

Mike: Well, my mum found these really cool fake ears. They make your ears bigger, and my grandmother is making my costume.

Reporter: Would you like to meet James Longwiskers?

Mike: Yes, why?

Reporter: Well, I think it is possible for me to arrange a meeting.

Mike: Really? Cool!

***

Reporter: Hi Cindy, what are you planning to go as on Halloween?

Cindy: A pumpkin.

Reporter: Cool, how are you making your costume?

Cindy: My family owns a pumpkin farm, so we are scooping out the insides and “drying” it out. Then we are going to cut arm, head, and tail holes. We will then line the inside with foil, so I can “walk” inside it.

Reporter: Nice! Thanks for this interview!

Art Thief Strikes Again (June 12) !

On June 12, 2020, the Hamstervill Art Museum was robbed of the Mona Squeaka. Only a tuft of black cat fur was left behind, and we had an interview with Abigail Carrots (bunny). Last night, there was another robbery: the Japanese painting The Wave was stolen. We talked to Abigail Carrots.

Reporter: Hello Abigail, can you give us some more details about what happened at the Hamstervill Art Museum?

Abigail: All I know is that it happened around 3:30 am this morning, and there was another big black piece of cat hair.

Reporter: Do you think the culprit is a cat?

Abigail: No, I think someone is using cat hair to throw suspicion off himself or herself.

Reporter: In our last interview, you tell us that the museum was closed for the time being. Was it open again at one point?

Abigail: No. We were remodeling parts, so it hasn’t been open since the first robbery.

Reporter: If the thief struck again, what do you think he or she would steal?

Abigail: Most of the staff think the thief would go after an African clay pot. I disagree, because the Africa section is at the heart of the museum. I think he would go after something closer to an exit, for example, the Victorian Era section.

Reporter: Thank you for this interview. I hope that the culprit will be caught soon, and the museum can reopen.

Storm Warning!

A storm has started to brew over the Capybara Islands...

The Hamstington Weather Forecast has been warning rodents in the area of the Capybara Islands to be ready to evacuate. Due to wind direction, weather rodents think the storm will be blown over all of Hamtsington and then unleash its full fury over the mountain ranges, where Lemmington, New Lemmington, and Lemmingvill are. Rodents are advised to check their city's regulations and to stay indoors when possible. All sport events, like Tail Tennis, will be cancelled until further notice. We will be trying to get an interview with the mayor of Hamstervill on how he is planning to handle the storm. The Daily Squeaker will still be sending out its daily reports, except that they may be limited to what is happening in our area of Hamstington, as we cannot travel.

A visit to the the Lemmingvill Castle

Due to the storm brewing over the Capybara Islands, we have had to stay indoors when possible. I, Mrs. Lemming (teacher of the Lemmington Botanical Art classes), was on a trip to the Lemmingvill Castle to get inspired for a new paiting. When I heard the Storm Warning message over the radio, I was stuck in Lemmingvill, as no one was allowed to leave or enter. As I was searching for my room (the castle is also used as an old fashioned hotel), I ran across three young gerbils. They helped me find my room and told me a lot about the Castle's history. So, I decided to ask The Daily Squeaker if I could interview them. Today I interviewed Milli, Sally, and Candy Gerbili about life and history of the Lemmingvill Castle.

Mrs. Lemming (top pic): Hello, girls. Can you tell me a bit about the Lemmingvill Castle's history?

Candy (middle, bottom pic): How much?

Mrs. Lemming: Well, how about why it was built and a bit about an interesting person?

Sally (left, bottom pic): The Lemmingvill Castle is actually called Fort Lem. It was built for King Alberto III Squeak, so he had a winter palace.

Milli (right, bottom pic): Our favorite rodent that ever lived at Fort Lem is Chazel Von Hamsti (see middle pic), she was a crazy lemming and really knew how to party.

Candy: She died over 50 years ago at age 92.

Sally: However, it's rumored that her ghost is still here …

Candy: Within these very walls …

Mrs. Lemming: Thank you for this fascinating history lesson, girls!

I may be here in Lemmingvill for some time, hopefully no more than two weeks! I find a new scoop or an interesting history lesson, I may be contacting The Daily Squeaker, and you will find a new report! Till then!

The Daily Squeaker was able to contact two rodents, Ann Rodentia, who lives in Lemmingvill, and Mr. Bushy-Tail, the owner of the diving shop near the Capybara Islands. Mr. Bushy-Tail is doing a phone interview ... Let's hear what they have to say on how they feel.

~ Mr. Chinchilla, reporter for The Daily Squeaker

Interview 1: Ann Rodentia

Reporter: Ms. Rodentia, you live in Lemmingvill, correct?

Ann: Yes.

Reporter: How do you feel about the storm?

Ann: Well, I’m scared about losing contact with my family in Gerbil Town. The rodents in Lemmingvill are all very nice, and we have created a town storage for food (for when the storm hits).

Reporter: The weather rodents are saying that the storm is likely to hit hardest in Lemmington, New Lemmington, and Lemmingvill. How do you feel about that?

Ann: Well, I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about it. I have to go; Mrs. Lemming has a question for me.

Bye!

Interview 2: Mr. Bushy-Tail

Reporter: Mr. Bushy-Tail, you live on a Capybara Island. Are you already feeling the effects of the storm?

Mr. Bushy-Tail: W-ell, I’m-- in Ham-vill. Had to leave --- place, too windy.

Reporter: MR. BUSHY-TAIL WE CAN BARELY HEAR YOU, WHEN DO YOU THINK THE STORM WILL PASS?

Molly Pausbacken

Interview with endangered Field Hamster!

We interview Molly Pausbacken, a European field hamster living in Germany

Reporter: Good morning, Ms. Pausbacken. How are you today?

Ms. Pausbacken: Good.

Reporter: You live in Germany, correct?

Ms. Pausbacken: Yes, Fredersdorf-Vogelsdorf to be exact. Well, if you go along the Holteistraße there should see a field on one side of the road, I live there. You can click HERE to be taken to google maps.

Reporter: Why are the field hamsters endangered?

Ms. Pausbacken: Well at least in Germany, farmers are using machines to harvest their crops, so they don’t leave anything for us! They are also harvesting too early, so we don’t get any food. Here is a link to a newspaper article from Germany. Non-German speaking rodents, you should be able to translate this page to English. Enjoy!

Reporter: Thank you for this interview, Ms. Pausbacken! We hope your extinction rate goes down over the next few months! Happy hibernation!

Rodent smuggles Skateboard into Hamstington!

The new favorite way of transportation!

Leona Hamsti (picture, second rodent from left) recently visited New York City on planet Earth. There she noticed that people were skate boarding everywhere! It was a real hit. So, Leone decided to get her own skateboard, and she managed to distract a shop owner and nab a skateboard keychain. She fixed it up, so it really worked.

Then on her flight back to planet Rodentus (Froggy-World & Hamstington), Leona took the key chain through the "rodentifier".

Rodentifier. When rodents travel to Planet Earth, they are “rodent size” and in Rodentus they are “human size”. The rodentifier makes anything that touches it “human size”.

So, the skateboard sprung back to "human size". However, Leona had forgotten that “human size” was a bit smaller than actual human size, so the skateboard was larger than she was.

She introduced it as a new mode of transportation, and the rodent government is currently working to get more skateboards from Earth.

Earth

Spacecraft launch successful!

On September 30, 2020, the 6th and last Glass Frog Mission was launched into space! The crew consisted of Vinnia Sharp (porcupine), Almondo Silver (hamster), Raven Ginger (guinea pig, sister of Georgia Giner, ice skating team), and Kimi Galaxi (winter white dwarf hamster). The mission was launched in Hamstervill.

Many rodents were unhappy, because there was a storm warning and the storm was still brewing. However, the director decided to launch the mission today, because if they did not they would have to wait until spring. You cannot launch a spacecraft in winter because the heat from the launch would melt the ice and cause major flooding.

The mission was sent up because for three years now, Planet Furball was sending abnormal thermal pictures back to Rodentus. The air filter that recorded the air quality was also acting abnormal. The air quality was usually green, however it was currently purple. It had been for the last year!

The mission was to check what was going on on Planet Furball. Part 2 of this article is coming on Friday, October 5, 2020.

~ Ms. Leopard Frog, reporter for IRSTA (International Rodent Space Travel Association)
