Mr. Thomas A. (Acorn) Capybara
Ms. Skunk-Tail

Flea invasion!

Rattington has been attacked by a flea invasion! Rodents are fearing that the attack will spread to other cities. All rodents in and around Rattington have been advised to stay indoors and stay around essential oils, which fleas hate. All summer camps are closed in the area. If you want to travel (for business or pleasure): flights, busses, and other modes of transportation are currently closed. Rodents will receive a refund.

We interview a gentleman capybara living in the area over a telephone call:

Reporter: Have you ever seen anything like this flea invasion?

Capybara: No.

Reporter: Do you have any idea how it started?

Capybara: Yes.

Reporter: What?

Capybara: It's a long known fact that Ms. Skunk-Tail is mad that she is unable to join the city council since she is not legally a rodent.

Reporter: So you think she let a big swarm of fleas loose?

Capybara: Yes.

Reporter: Are you worried about getting fleas?

Capybara: A little.

Reporter: Thank you for this interview, Mr. Capybara! It was interesting to get your opinion!

Ms. Skunk-Tail

Flea invasion! Part 2: Interview With Ms. Skunk-Tail

Reporter: Good Afternoon, Ms. Skunk! You requested an interview?

Ms. Skunk-Tail: I would like to sue you for yesterday's article, but decided an interview would be more effective.

Reporter: What is the issue?

Ms. Skunk-Tail: I am offended at what Mr. Capybara said yesterday!!!!!!!!!

Reporter: Please explain…

Ms. Skunk-Tail: Mr. Capybara said he thought I had set a big swarm of fleas loose because I wasn’t allowed on the city council! Such nonsense!

Reporter: Then what is the true story?

Ms. Skunk-Tail: The truth is, I was (and still am) mad at the Rattington City Council. I find it unfair because in Rattington 50% of the population is made up of skunks. So why should skunks not have a voice?

Ms. Guinea: Good morning, sir.

Reporter: Why did you decide to start a café?

Ms. Guinea: I wanted to do something for the rodent community.

Reporter: Why did you choose New Guinea Pig City?

Ms. Guinea: I think rodents should be able to relax more, especially in big cities like New Guinea Pig City.

Albert Beachram & Family - From Left to Right: Mrs. Mira Beachram, Mr. Alberto Beachram, Albert Beachram

MerHamster spotted!

On July 8, 3:35 Albert Beachram was at the beach in New Guinea Pig City looking for a scoop for his school newspaper. He was eating a computer cord when somebody on the beach shouted, “Look! A merhamster!”. It would have been the perfect scoop Albert was awaiting for, but it unfortunately was only a hamster who was stuck in kelp. A while later, a fisherman said to him, “Sir, could you help me reel in these fishnets?” While helping the fisherman, something caught Albert's eye....

It was a strange glint under the water, it seemed to be spiraling upward. Then she leaped gracefully out of the water- the Merhamster.

We interviewed Albert Beachram below:

Reporter: Good afternoon, Mr. Beachram. How did you feel after you saw the Merhamster?

Mr. Beachram: It was amazing, I finally had something interesting to write about for our school newspaper.

Reporter: Can you describe the Merhamster for us?

Mr. Beachram: She had a silver tail, and long pale blue hair that blended into the water. Also, she seemed to be surrounded by a wall of bubbles even when she leaped out of the water.

Reporter: Do you know any facts about Merhamsters?

Mr. Beachram: No.

Reporter: Would you like me to share some?

Mr. Beachram: Sure.

Reporter: Ok, Merhamsters were last seen in Hamstington in 1978. They can turn into normal hamsters in times of need. The oldest recorded sighting is the picture you see on the top right corner; we don’t know when it was taken. Thank you for a fantastic interview, Mr. Beachram!

New Guinea Pig City Library

We interview Ms. Llama below:

Reporter: Good afternoon, Ms. Llama!

Ms. Llama: Hello.

Reporter: You have been interviewed for The Daily Squeaker, correct?

Ms. Llama: Yes.

Reporter: Ok, you can find the interview in our 'Bonus Article' section or click HERE.

Ms. Lama: Remember, my break is soon over, and I am not available tomorrow.

Reporter: Do you work in the Main Branch of the Library?

Ms. Llama: Currently or before?

Reporter: Both.

Ms. Llama: I currently work in the mystery section of the Main Branch library.

Reporter: And be-

Ms. Llama: Patience! Before…..

Before I worked in the library in New Prairie Town, before that in the science area in New Guinea Pig City.

Reporter: Thank you for this interview, Ms. Llama! Rodents, read July 10, for Ms. Llama’s interview part 2!

New Library Branch opening!

In Hamstervill, a new library branch will be opening soon on Rodentia Lane. Rodents are very happy! Hamstervill already has the Main Library Branch, but it is on Main Street and not very easy to find. So Rodents will be building a new Library Branch on Rodentia Lane.

For Rodents who have never been in Hamstervill:

Rodentia Lane is on the side facing the coast in Hamstervill, the Main Branch is in the heart of Hamstervill. The Library will be built on the corner nearest the coast and will be painted a nice shade of blue (see photo below).

New Diving Classes around Capybara Islands!

Mr. Bushy-Tail has decided to start classes for diving. He teaches Rodents how to safely dive around the Capybara Islands. We interviewed him today about his business.

Reporter: Hello, Mr. Bushy-Tail.

Mr. Bushy-Tail: Call me Mr. Bushy.

Reporter: What is your business?

Mr. Bushy: I have a small shop that sells diving equipment; I also do diving classes for rodents.

Reporter: Where do you do your diving classes?

Mr. Bushy: In the middle of one island is a small lake we start there, more advanced groups dive outside the islands.

Reporter: Do you teach kids and adults?

Mr. Bushy: Yes.

Reporter: Do you also do summer camps?

Mr. Bushy: We used to.

Reporter: What happened?

Mr. Bushy: We got tight on money, and the rodents weren’t picking up their trash.

Reporter: Were those camps overnight?

Mr. Bushy: Some.

Reporter: Can you describe your program?

Mr. Bushy: There are 3 groups: starters, 2 years, and advanced. The starters start to learn in the lake. The 2 years get to dive around the islands, and the advanced group of rodents splits into learning how to ice dive, cave diving or just general tricks (like photography).

Reporter: How long is a training session?

Mr. Bushy: They are like camps, you sign up for a 2 week session (not overnight).

Reporter: Do you want to bring back summer camps?

Mr. Bushy: Yes. You can help by signing up for a class.

Interview with Ms. Llama

Part 2

We interview Ms. Llama below:

Reporter: Good evening, Ms. Llama!

Ms. Llama: Hello.

Reporter: Let's get back to this interview?

Ms. Llama: Hmm..

Reporter: Do you think that a new library branch is a good thing?

Ms. Lama: Yes.

Reporter: Do you like the location?

Ms. Llama: No.

Reporter: Why?

Ms. Llama: Did you know that the place they want to build the library in was once a villa?

Reporter: No.

Ms. Llama: I worked there as a maid once.

Reporter: And?

Ms. Llama: Haven’t I told you already, PATIENCE! Well, the second year I was there, there was a strong storm and since the location is so close to the beach part of the villa flooded.

Reporter: So?

Ms. Llama: So, if there is a storm that strong ever again, part of the library would flood.

Reporter: When you worked there as a maid, where did it flood?

Ms. Llama: The Cellar and part of the first floor.

Reporter: How many floors were there?

Ms. Llama: There’s the cellar, the first, and second floor. And maybe an attic.

Reporter: Thank you for this wonderful interview.

The Case of the Missing Actress solved!

The Case of the Missing Actress was solved on Saturday (July 11) by Detective Smallfur (Hamstington’s Private Detective, though he also worked for the Hamstington Detective Department sometimes). He did not give us very many details about how he solved the case but he says they may be coming out soon in The Daily Squeaker. See below for available information!

Maria Furball’s kidnapper was Furball Ratty, a white rat (see picture). Furball Ratty is the most wanted rodent in all of Hamstington. He started his life on the run after robbing a jewelry store in Lemmington. He got away, but Detective Smallfur thinks he knows where his hideout is. Maria Furball is safe and being questioned by the police to find out if Furball Ratty works alone or with a gang. We hope to get an interview with her soon.

The house Maria was kept in is currently being searched, the name and address is currently unavailable to the public.

We also hope to get an interview with Detective Smallfur to see how he solved the case!

The movie “The Ghost of Hamstervill” will still finish filming, but it will likely come out later! Also, if you are interested in having Maria Furball in one of your movies, we will sadly have to tell you that Maria Furball will be on vacation until December 15, 2020!

Back to school sales starting!

Many stores in Hamstington have started selling ‘back to school’ supplies (e.g. erasers, pencils, crayons). They hope to get an early start since many rodents prefer to get supplies before there is a huge rush. There are some new erasure colors that The Daily Squeaker thinks would interest you (you can click on the color - it is a link!):

Here is a list of stores that have started to sell ‘back to school’ supplies by a good price (not the typical):

  • Hamstervill Office Supplies

  • Office Paws

  • Rodent School

  • Guinea Pig Office Supplies

  • Lemming School/Office Depot

  • Notebook (The Rodent School Store)

Interview with Detective Smallfur

Reporter: Was the ‘Case of The Missing Actress’ a hard one?

Detective Smallfur: Yes.

Reporter: Have you always been a private detective?

Detective Smallfur: No, I was a police detective until I realized that rodents seem to give more information to a private one, I do occasionally work with them though.

Reporter: Can you give me an example?

Detective Smallfur: Yes, a Guinea Pig living in the area of the kidnapping told me that she had seen a car drive by a couple minutes after Maria was reported missing with a white rat at the wheel. When I asked if she had told the police she said she hadn’t, “it didn’t seem to be a very important clue”, she said.

Reporter: How did you realize Furball Ratty was the kidnapper?

Detective Smallfur: It was the clue the guinea pig told me. At first I also thought it was a non-important clue, but then I thought about that Furball Ratty hadn’t been very active in the crime world, which was very strange. He also was a white rat, after asking around a bit I figured out that a white rat with a British accent had been living in the area and had left the day of the kidnapping.

Reporter: Why were you chosen to solve the case?

Detective Smallfur: The Furball family lives around the corner from me, and we seem to get along very well. Mr. Furball does not seem to trust the Hamstervill police very much and preferred to have the case solved by a private detective, so they put a police officer/detective and me on it.

Reporter: Thank you for this interview, Detective Smallfur!

Botanical Art Classes!

The Lemmington Botanical Garden is offering drawing classes for all rodents! We interview the class teacher, Mrs. Lemming:

Reporter: Why did you decide to start art classes?

Mrs. Lemming: So many people ask me what colors I would recommend, if I do classes, if I would do private tutoring. So to answer all the questions I decided to start botanical art classes.

Mrs. Lemming

Reporter: What “kind” of color do you most like?

Mrs. Lemming: Do you mean shade?

Reporter: Yes.

Mrs. Lemming: Pastel, is my all time favorite.

Reporter: What do you plan to teach in your classes?

Mrs. Lemming: Water color, it seems to be the most challenging. Also how to start a painting and how to gather inspiration.

Reporter: When did you start drawing/painting?

Mrs. Lemming: I think it was the first time I came to the botanical garden. I drew a picture of it afterwards.

Reporter: Do you have photographic memory?

Mrs. Lemming: Many rodents ask that, but no, someone tested me and it turns out that I don’t.

Reporter: Thank you for this interview, Mrs. Lemming! Please see link below for the Berkeley Botanical Garden, on planet Earth!

Interview with Maria Furball

The Daily Squeaker is very happy to inform you that we were able to get an interview with Maria Furball; the actress that went missing. Maria will be accompanied to the interview by a Hamstervill police officer so she won’t spill any unnecessary beans.

Reporter: How do you feel?

Maria: Ok, actually.

Reporter: Can you give us your side of the story?

Maria: Yes, well I was stepping outside to get a breath of fresh air after the director told us we would be filming the last scene that day. Then suddenly I saw a flash of white and I could no longer see. When I tried to scream someone clamped their hand over my mouth and said something. I don’t remember what they said but the voice reminded me of Samanda; a fellow actress of mine.

Police Officer: (Clears throat, and gives Maria a look)

Reporter: And then?

Police Officer: That is classified information that is not ready to give to the public. If you have any more questions please proceed, or we will be getting back to the police headquarters.

Reporter: That will be all Officer, I hope we will be able to get another interview with Maria when the story is no longer “CLASSIFIED”.

Mr. Strictfur

Bank Robbery!

In the city of New Prairie Town, rodents were shocked to find out that the “Bank of Hamstington'' was robbed possibly by its own employees! We talk to the head banker, Mr. Strictfur.

Reporter: Good afternoon, sir.

Mr. Strictfur: Yes.

Reporter: Please explain the robbery….

Mr. Strictfur: Yesterday evening, I was locking up the bank for the night, when one of my employees came running up, panting, saying “He had forgotten his jacket inside his office. Naturally, I unlocked the door to let him back in. I was waiting outside when someone/something hit me on the head, and I suspect my employee to have done it.

Reporter: But wasn’t your employee inside?

Mr. Strictfur: Correct, but after he went inside I turned around (so I was facing the street, not the inside of the building). He could have knocked me out from behind.

Reporter: So what happened next?

Mr. Strictfur: Well, I woke up and locked the door and went to the police station...and the rest is history. Detective Amy Gerbilia is currently working on the case. Many things are still confidential.

Ms. Lizaria

Strange new fortune teller in Hamstervill!

Ms. Lizaria is Hamstervill’s new fortune teller, and it is also rumored that she can read paws, claws, and tea leaves. She appeared in Hamstervill a week ago (July 14) and has since started a business on Main street. We interviewed a customer to find out why she is so strange. Here is our interview with Amy W., a guinea pig living in a houseboat on the Carrot River.

Reporter: When did you visit Ms. Lizaria?

Amy W: July 19.

Reporter: How did you hear about her?

Amy W: A friend of mine saw one of her posters.

Reporter: Why did you go?

Amy W: Don’t you ever want to know a fortune?

Reporter: Can you describe your experience?

Amy W: Well, I waited in the waiting room for about half an hour, when Ms. Lizaria called me in. I entered a dark room, and Ms. Lizaria in the far right corner across from me.

Reporter: What did she look like?

Amy W: She was wearing a metallic, sparkling, dark blue turban with silver stars.

Reporter: What did you do next?

Amy W: I sat down on the sparkly metallic green cushioned chair she was pointing at.

Reporter: And then?

Amy W: She gazed into a crystal ball and started to mutter something.

Reporter: What happened next?

Amy W: I can’t tell you, Ms. Lizaria’s only rule was that I never tell her what she told me.

Reporter: And if I tell you what she was doing was illegal?

Amy W: A promise is a promise.

Reporter: Thank you for this interview. (Said with sarcasm)

Amy W: Thank you for having me. (Said in very sweet voice)

New Library Branch Opening Party (July 8)!

Even though Ms. Lyndsie Llama voiced concerns about the location of the new library in Hamstervill it still opened today! Many rodents came to the opening party today, one of the guests was Mr. Antonio Smellfur, one of Hamstington’s top sports coaches. It turns out that he is a true bookworm and loves the library.

Mrs. Angelina Berryfrost, a harvest mouse from Squirrel Village, was also present. It turns out that her sister, Elizabeth Ann Berryfrost, will be the leading librarian in this new library.

Ms. Guinea had brought food and drinks. The lemonade was most popular among gerbils, but the guinea pigs preferred her raspberry soda. We think Ms. Guinea found some new customers at the event.

The Library officially is open for book check-out tomorrow (July 25). However, this library will only be open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 10:00 am - 3:00 pm until the library finds more staff.

Thanks to Ms. Llamas concerns, scientists have decided to watch the library. They will alert it if there are any signs that there will be a flood, so they can move books to upper levels of the library.

Art Collection stolen!

This Tuesday, Mr. Ground Squirrel reported to the Hamstervill police that his valuable art collection had been stolen. The police does not have any leads to who the culprit is. We were able to get an interview with the Detective leading the case; Detective Furry-Pants (SEE PICTURE BELOW).

Detective Furry-Pants

Reporter: Good Afternoon, Detective Furry-Pants. You are the rodent that is leading the Case of the Stolen Art, correct?

Detective Furry-Pants: Correct.

Reporter: So, can you give the public any clues that you found?

Detective Furry-Pants: No, Unfortunately not.

Reporter: Why?

Detective Furry-Pants: Because we haven’t found any.

Reporter: Do you have any theories you would like to share?

Detective Furry-Pants: Yes, but nobody will listen to them at the police station. I think Mr. Ground Squirrel faked the entire mystery.

Reporter: What do you mean?

Detective Furry-Pants: I mean that I think the art collection was never stolen. I think Mr. Ground Squirrel only hid the collection to get the insurance money, or he wanted to get into the news.

Reporter: Don’t you have to pay the police to get something investigated?

Detective Furry-Pants: No.

Reporter: Thank you for this interview, Detective Furry-Pants!

Detective Capybara: Interview

Reporter: How long have you been a detective?

Detective Capybara: I don’t know, maybe 50 years.

Reporter: Why did you become a detective?

Detective Capybara: I always loved playing detective and when I got older I actually started a detective club, still later I actually became one.

Reporter: How did you become head of the detective department?

Detective Capybara: The position was offered to Detective Smallfur, but for some reason he turned it down, the head of the entire police department then offered the position to me, and I said yes.

Reporter: Do you recommend becoming a detective?

Detective Capybara: Well, we work more in an office then in the field, that is the part that most books get wrong, otherwise YES!

Reporter: Have you ever considered becoming a private detective?

Detective Capybara: No, never. I enjoy working with a group, rather than alone.

Reporter: As Head of the Department what are your duties?

Detective Capybara: As Head of the Detective Department I make sure that all rodents do and are able to solve their cases.

Reporter: Who was head before you?

Detective Capybara: A grumpy little lady, by the name of Hilda. Just kidding😁. Detective Rat tooth, but he retired.

Reporter: Do you ever regret becoming a detective?

Detective Capybara: No.

Detective Capybara: Life Story

Detective Capybara was born on the capybara islands, he lived there all while he was in grade school, he then went to high school in Lemmington and college Hamstervill, there he met Detective Smallfur and they went through their detective training together. He is now head of the detective department in the Hamstervill Police. He loves winter and snow and owns a small cabin in the Hamstington Mountains. He is married to Janet Capybara, and they have 3 children Samanda (10), Edalione (8), and John (3).

Detective Capybara: Top 3 Mysteries

A note from Detective Capybara: The first case is the hardest I ever solved, the second one is the first case I ever had, and the third one I never solved.

1. Mrs. Woodmouse came to me once, saying she had a mystery that needed solving. She said she had heard something come into her house, and the next day she had noticed that most of her silver was gone. That night she heard the sound again, this time she followed it and it was coming from a portrait that had been painted of a summer meadow. The sound was a cross between a moan and a wail, sometimes loud and sometimes soft. The next day she realized that a window on the third floor was open and broken and her mother's pearl necklace was gone. She insisted that I solve it, not another detective.

I knew that the sound that she was talking about could be a ghost, but the sound could also be produced when rubbing together the right types of metal. Mrs. Woodmouse had a large tree close to her house, and it was possible that whoever was stealing was using that window as an entrance and exit. When I asked Mrs. Woodmouse how long the window had been broken, she said she did not know “We don’t really use the 3rd floor, so we rarely go up there, the window could have been broken for months.” The part that bothered me most about the case was that Mrs. Woodmouse didn’t really seem to be worried. That part seemed to suggest that she may have hidden the necklace, so I asked her if it was possible that she had misplaced the necklace, she answered, “No, it’s not very likely. I keep it in my room in a small drawer, I never take it out except to clean it every month. And I cleaned it on July 1.” “What if one of your children took it out to play with?” I asked. “No we have a very strict rule, nobody takes out or touches the necklace without supervision.”

I insisted on searching the house (it took 3 weeks) and found many promising leads (e.g. the maid had worked a lot with metal and had just left), I still didn’t understand if the noise Mrs. Woodmouse had heard whether it was a ghost or not. I solved the case by accident when I was leaving the house one day, one of Mrs. Woodmouses children was playing in the hallway, she tripped and stood up unharmed (though she had just fallen face forward onto rough asphalt), as I helped her stand up my arm when through hers; she was a ghost. At that moment I understood how the case fit together. The house was home to a ghost, since Mrs. Woodmouse was unable to lie; she had the ghost act out the scene with her. She then had the maid leave and gave her the silver and the pearl necklace, and came to the police station. She didn’t realize the window on the 3rd floor was open until the day she came to the police station, but it fit in perfectly into her plan that she decided to include it.

2. Samantha Pine-Tree came into the police station one day claiming that her purse had been stolen. She said it had happened on Main Street, “a white rat was walking behind me and suddenly I felt my purse being tugged out of my hand, I think it was the white rat”. The description seemed to describe Furball Ratty (currently still on the run) perfectly, but before I jumped to that conclusion I asked “What hand did you hold your purse with when it was stolen?” “My right one” “So Furball Ratty would have grabbed it with his right hand as well?” “Correct.” “That is not possible Furball Ratty lost the use of his right hand when he was 3 in an accident, that means either you still have your purse or another white rat stole it”. At that she confessed that it had all been a plot to land Furball Ratty in jail, Furball Ratty at that time had only done minor crimes so was not yet wanted in jail.

3. “The castle of the queen was attacked!” Screamed all the headlines! I was responsible to solve the case, who or what and how had attacked the living space of the Queen of Hamstington. The attacker could not be a ghost since the castle had defensive spells everywhere against them. It could not be a guard for they were sworn to protect their queen, if they broke that (as the Queen of Hearts would Say “Off with Their heads!”)... I was stumped. I worked on the case for more than a year, but I never ever found a clue, not one! So at last I was forced to admit that the case seemed unsolvable!
